Award-winning Ultramarathon.

Come and explore one of Surrey’s least-known trails – “The Fox Way” – to which this award-winning, long-distance running event owes its name. A popular alternative to the London Marathon, The Fox Ultra presents runners with a unique opportunity to circumnavigate Guildford (via Godalming, Shere, Clandon, Ripley, Worplesdon, and Puttenham) – an impressive claim to tick off of any runner’s bucket list. The circular 62km ultramarathon – which can be completed individually or as part of a 3-stage relay team – is supported with 5 aid stations and showcases some of the very best views that the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has to offer; from woodlands, grasslands and farmlands to urban and river-side scenery – this event truly has it all. Marathon and Half Marathon events set off later in the morning and follow shorter sections of this picturesque, mixed-terrain route so that all runners unite at the same finish line in Godalming. All participants are rewarded with huge medals, branded headwraps, complimentary refreshments and free sports massage. We’re told that your achievements are best celebrated with a shandy from our Horsebox Gin Bar… we’re game if you are! NEW for 2021: We are planning to double up for 2021 and run The Fox twice – once in each direction. Announcement coming soon.

The Fox offers 3 race distances, with different start locations, all finishing at Godalming United Church

ULTRA start – Godalming United Church

MARATHON (42km) start – Clandon Garden Centre

HALF MARATHON (21km) start – Worplesdon Train Station

RELAY Leg 1: Godalming to Clandon Train Station (20km). Leg 2: Clandon Train Station to Worplesdon Train Station (18.5km). Leg 3: Worplesdon Train Station to Godalming (22.5km).

🚗 Travel

We strongly encourage walking, cycling or running to this event if possible. Godalming Station is a 5-minute walk away. The marathon start is a 20-minute walk from Clandon station and the half marathon start is at Worplesdon station.

Please ensure that you plan in advance. There is NO PARKING at the event venue, 41km or 21km start locations. Find nearby parking options via Parkopedia. No shuttle services operate at this event.


ℹ️ Registration

Collect your personalised race number (with integrated timing chip) from your start venue on event day. To encourage social distancing, you will be given a specific race registration time. 

There will be an online/ e-briefing before event day.


🎒 Bag Drop

There is no bag drop available at this event, due to Covid-19 restrictions. Please only bring the kit that you will be carrying with you. A provisional kit list has been posted under the participant information button.

Toilets will be available at Aid Stations and in the Event Village.


➡️ Route Markers

All routes will be fully marked and checked by dedicated marshals before the ultramarathon start. We advise all participants to familiarise yourselves with the route ahead of the event. Consider bringing a map or download the route .GPX file to your watch/device.

❤️ Aid Stations

There are 5 Aid Stations positioned along the 60km Ultramarathon route. Hand sanitisation facilities will be provided at all aid station, with strict guidelines for taking food.



Event Types

Ultra Marathon: Registration times 6:10 – 7:10. The full Ultra Marathon is 62km, starting and finishing at Godalming Reformed Church.

Marathon: Registration times 9:00 – 9:40. Starting at Clandon House, the marathon joins the same route as the Ultra race to finish in Godalming.

Half Marathon: Registration times 9:50 – 10:40. Starting at Worplesdon Train Station, the half marathon joins the same route as the Ultra race and finishes in Godalming.

Relay: Registration times 6:10 – 7:10. Leg 1: Godalming to Clandon Train Station (20km). Leg 2: Clandon Train Station to Worplesdon Train Station (18.5km). Leg 3: Worplesdon Train Station to Godalming (22.5km).

*Please note that each runner will be given a specific registration time within the times above, based on their predicted finish time.

👟 Provisional Ultra Kit List

Please note that this list is provisional. The full confirmed kit list will be posted in the event information pack, in the week leading up to the event.

Trainers: The Fox is 70% trail, so a comfortable pair of trail shoes are essential!

Socks: For maximum comfort – and to avoid getting blisters – ensure you wear a proper pair of running socks. We recommend Hilly Socks.

Layers: You will be out running for most of the day. Please prepare for the weather to change and it can change quickly in the Surrey Hills!

Mobile Phone: Essential! Please ensure that you have a fully charged mobile phone. You will be provided with an emergency contact number, which must be added to your phone before race day.

Battery Pack: Please ensure that your mobile phone is fully charged, or bring a battery pack if you know it’s likely to run out within a day.

Face mask: Essential for wearing at registration and aid stations.

Personal hand sanitiser: We will have hand sanitiser readily available, so this is optional.

Space blanket: Conditions can change quickly, so please carry one of these to stay safe.

Water: You must start with a minimum of 1L of water, in a full water vessel. We recommend purchasing a hydration pack. These can be easily topped up at each of the 5 aid stations.

Nutrition: We recommend carrying some energy gels or carbohydrate-rich snack bars. We will also have a range of sweet and savoury foods at each of the 5 aid stations.

Headtorch (Ultra Runners): This is compulsory for all ultra distance runners, the trails will be dark in the morning. Registration will begin at 6.10am and the first runners will be out by 6.30am, official sunrise time is around 6.42am but the trails won’t lighten up for a little while after that.

Whistle: To attract attention should you need to.

Medical pack: Plasters and pain relief are essential.
